& you swore you saw me laughing & i swore i saw you smile Okay. Maybe she was a bit nervous…or a lot nervous. But it had been years since a guy had actually, formally asked Madisyn on a date, but the night before she had been cuddling with Red when he properly asked her on a date. They had agreed on a little picnic, and to Syn’s delight, it was an impeccably warm day in Maine.
Red and Madisyn had been friends for a while. Opening night of the tour in DC, the sponsors hosted a welcome party. Madi rolled in with Tommy, Venus, and Luka. Immediately she spotted this head of smooth red hair trailing behind her friend Ander. She instantly felt the need to bounce over and introduce herself; partly because he looked a bit lost, but mostly just because she was extremely attracted to him. And from that day forward they had been friends. Red was one of the few people who respected her and appreciated her for who she really was. Often time’s people called her psychotic, or a freak. Maybe she wasn’t sane. But she loved who she was, and she knew he did too.
After a long day of lazy rehearsals and recordings Syn was a bit tired but far too excited to cancel due to lethargy. So she cleaned herself up and shuffled through her extensive and eclectic wardrobe while wrapped up in her puffy navy blue bathrobe. Now the outfit she chose, although cute, probably resembled her to a bumble bee. Not that she minded. She pulled her black and yellow zebra skirt over her narrow hips and tugged her tight-fitted black tack top over her head. She polished off the outfit with black bow flats, an old owl ring and her thin straightened long white hair that lay off to one side on her shoulder was set off by a black flower headband. Before heading out she grabbed a yellow wrap cardigan and bounced down the steep stairs of the bus.
As promised, Syn’s baby chinchilla would be tagging along on their date. It was rare that Madisyn ever went anywhere without Phoenix anyways. So she tucked the small animal in her black tote back and headed down the street. Luckily enough for her the bus lot was only about a mile walk from the local park. Madisyn bounced down the street, cars whizzing pass with a few slowing to either honk or confirm her identity as the front girl of one of the touring bands. People expected life to change because of “fame.” But things hardly changed for Syn. And because she was doing what she loved she felt like this was how life was supposed to be anyway.
Madi arrived around 4 minutes before their agreed upon time and figured she settle down and wait until at least five after before she’d start getting paranoid that she’d been stood up.
She walked over to the swing set and took a seat kicking her short legs and small feet in front of her. She smiled to herself shutting her eyes as she felt her long hair fly out behind her and then whip forward to the sides of her face. It wasn’t until she was a few feet of the ground that she heard a twig snap behind her. Notes: None Tags: Red; Word Count: 546 Outfit: Click! Muse: Mehh

In all honesty, Red wasn't all that experienced in the whole 'dating' department. Yes, he'd been on a fair few dates in his time, but most of them didn't work out too well. Not because the girl didn't like him, but usually because Red didn't think that it felt right. Something had to feel right to him in order to go anywhere. It never actually had. Sometimes the date ended in awkward sex if the girl was slutty and convincing enough, but that was rare.
He'd put a lot of effort into this date; it was the first he'd had in a few months. Red somehow saw it actually being a successful date despite the fact he was slightly unsure of himself and didn't quite know what Madisyn was expecting. She seemed like the sentimental type that would appreciate thought and effort rather than actual quality. Which was good, since Red was really bad at anything related to food.
He strolled into the park, carrying a little basket with some food, candles - though the sun was still high in the sky - and flowers for Syn. Granted, he looked rather stupid, and probably gay with the basket, but he didn't mind. If having an entertaining date meant looking stupid as he walked from his bus to the park, then he'd gladly do it. Hopefully it would be worth it, and Madisyn would appreciate all of the blood, sweat and tears he'd put into making the picnic.. or perhaps the few dollars he'd given to a friend to make some food. But Red had helped! There was no way he was going to give her the sandwiches he'd make that would probably have more butter than bread.
He could see Madisyn, and his lips automatically twisted into a wide grin, and he started to speed up his pace. He stopped a few meters away from her, watching her climb onto the swing set, her back still to him. She soared through the air, her hair flying back behind her, and the forward again into her face. He liked just standing there watching her, but began to feel a little creepy. He decided to sneak up behind her, and began to walk slowly in her direction, trying to remain as silent as possible. A twig snapped, and just in that instant, Madisyn stopped swinging, and Red mentally kicked himself. No point in sneaking anymore.. she'd already heard him.
"Damn it.. I was trying to scare you by sneaking up behind you!" he said in slight frustration, but then smiled when he saw her face. He guessed it was her beauty that made him smile so much. He delved into his pocket, pulling out two little Beaker finger puppets. "I brought Beaker, of course!" He put one of the Beaker's on his forefinger, and wiggled it a little, then walked closer to Syn, closing some of the distance between them, and took her hand, first bending to kiss it, and then sitting on one knee as though he were about to propose. "Madisyn Powers, you are a magnificent girl! I would only do this to somebody truly special.. And I think that you fit the specification!" He took her hand in his, still on one knee, and slipped the other Beaker puppet on her finger, and chuckled. "Take good care of him for me!"
He straightened up again, smiling at her, and tousled his hand with his free hand. "I wasn't sure what kinda food you liked.. so I just brought a bunch of stuff. If you don't like anything.. that would suck, but I could take you out to a restaurant instead, I don't mind." He looked down at the picnic basket. "It isn't really the best fashion accessory in the world, but what's a picnic without a basket and red and white checked sheet?!"
Red looked around the park. It was fairly empty, save for a few kids around and people walking their dogs on the green. They had free choice of where to sit. Were it the middle of the day he would have chosen a spot right beneath a large tree so that they'd be shaded, but it was the evening now, and the sun would be gone soon, and they may even need the candles rather than them just sitting there for decoration. "Choose where you want to sit. It appear that we have free-reign of the park, so anywhere suits me!"
Words: 792 Muse: Good Notes: Dear Lord.. that's the first good length post I've ever made that hasn't been sucked completely dry by the end. Please excuse the typos. I noticed a few of them.. like "he put a lot of date into this date".. but there may be some other huge fails in there.. Outfit: Sexxxy. Not really date attire, Red!..

& you swore you saw me laughing & i swore i saw you smile You know that terribly wonderful feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you’re really scared or nervous; that feeling of your entire digestive system turning over and somersaulting? That was Madisyn that very second. She kicked herself higher and higher into the air trying to untangle the unnerving knots in her stomach but the more she tried the more she thought about Red and the evening to come. Although before it was difficult to put her finger on what made Red so different from everyone else, Syn had figured it out. As mentioned, people always saw her imagination manifest itself into insanity. But that wasn’t even close to reality. And there were few people who didn’t think she was absolutely bonkers. Red and Ronnie were the two who understood the most. Mainly in Ronnie’s case it was simply because she actually was crazy. But for Red, he just understood. He took the time to learn to love Syn, and every little senseless thing she said and did. He appreciated who she was and she could only hope to keep that. And despite the terribly disturbing knots she still couldn’t help but smile as she squeezed her eyes shut. And then just for a second….everything stopped.
Madisyn was well known for her whimsicality and broad imagination. This was one of those brief random moments where it took over. One of the things Madisyn loved about swings was the feeling of freedom with them. The feeling of being off the ground, although only a few feet from reality, made her feel alone in the most beautiful way. It was like time stopping for her. She’d never have to touch down if she didn’t want to. Never have to live as she did. It was like being a bird in her own little world up in the air. Then the twig snap tossed her back to earth.
For only a mere second her smile fell and her eyes flew open. However, knowing exactly who to expect, her lips parted into a huge wild grin. She scraped her small shoes in the dirt below her, stopping herself. She hopped off the swing and turned to face Red who, although looking rather rugged, looked as strapping as ever with his basket and flowers. The sentimental nature of it all was already enough to melt Syn into a black, white, and yellow puddle at his feet.
"Damn it.. I was trying to scare you by sneaking up behind you!" Madisyn couldn’t help but giggle at the frustration in his voice. “It’s alright. I was a bird just now. Birds are very easily startled,” she said as she tiptoed over to him her fingers folded together behind her back. She stopped in front of him and watched as he pulled Beaker squared out of his pocket. She knew her face must have lit up with excitement. "I brought Beaker, of course!" She couldn’t hold in one of those sudden-throw-your-head-back laughs as he put it on wiggling Beaker about. Just as she dropped her hands from behind her back and let them fall to the front of her he grabbed one laying a gentle kiss on it. Needless to say she could feel her pale white cheeks flush a pale pink. And then he dropped to one knee and Syn’s heart skipped a beat. Was he about to… "Madisyn Powers, you are a magnificent girl! I would only do this to somebody truly special.. And I think that you fit the specification!" She felt her eyes widen as her mouth depicted a shaky fearful smile. And then, to her relief, he slipped the other Beaker onto her finger, which was still a big commitment! "Take good care of him for me!" he said standing back up. “Of course I will Red!” she said chuckling, holding her hand out at arm’s length to assess the fit of her new finger accessory.
"I wasn't sure what kinda food you liked...so I just brought a bunch of stuff. If you don't like anything...that would suck, but I could take you out to a restaurant instead, I don't mind. It isn't really the best fashion accessory in the world, but what's a picnic without a basket and red and white checked sheet?!" Madisyn wasn’t too picky about food, just as long as it didn’t still have eyes. And yet again, the sentiment of all though thought put into the date gave her butterflies that fluttered all the way up into her throat. “You have nothing to worry about; it takes a real man to carry a picnic basket.” She smiled at him with innocent intent. "Choose where you want to sit. It appears that we have free-reign of the park, so anywhere suits me!" For a brief moment Madisyn looked all around her, her eyes first settling on the large full oak tree providing sufficient shade and gorgeous scenery. But then, off to the right behind the oak was a smaller spindly looking tree that was a bit contorted, and appeared to be having a hard time growing a sufficient amount of leaves. To put it bluntly it was one ugly tree. Syn perked up and pointed at the distorted looking thing. “That one!” She intertwined her Beaker clad hand with his, letting the two finger puppets tap together as she dragged him over to their picnic site. "Oh wait a moment!" she said stopping dead in her tracks nearly knocking herself into Red. She turned to face him looking down at her tote bag, still not letting go of his hand. With her free hand she dug into her bag, pulling out a squeaking sleepy baby chinchilla. "Phoenix says hi." She smiled wrinkling her nose holding the small creature up to his face. She giggled touching the chinchilla's nose to Red's. "Told you I'd bring him."

“It’s alright. I was a bird just now. Birds are very easily startled,”
At first Red didn't understand what she was talking about. Madisyn certainly did come out with some strange things at time - thankfully not as strange as what Ronnie said. Ronnie honestly did confuse him, since she seemed to talk about things in a somewhat vague or confusing way. Her views on life seemed very different to his. Which was exactly why he was taking Madisyn out on this date, and not Ronnie. That and the fact that he was pretty certain that Ronnie hated him. He wasn't too upset about that, it wasn't as though he felt anything other than friendship for anybody other than Madisyn, or so he thought at that moment. When he understood that she was talking about the way she flew through the air on the swing, he chuckled softly. A bumblebee would be more fitting, since she was wearing so much black and yellow.
The look of trepidation on Madisyn's face as he got down on one knee made him want to burst out laughing, but he kept a straight face the entire time as he gave away one of his precious Beaker finger puppets. “Of course I will Red!” exclaimed Madisyn her shocked expression turning into one of the most beautiful smiles that Red had ever seen.
“You have nothing to worry about; it takes a real man to carry a picnic basket.”
Red snorted. "Usually when people say that they mean 'you look gay, but as long as you know you're not, it's okay'. But I don't mind. I'd look like an idiot for you any day! In fact I'm sure that I frequently do look like an idiot around you."
“That one!”
Red looked over to where she was pointing. At first he saw a slightly closer tree, which was fully shaded and next to a trash can. Then he realized that she was pointing somewhere else, a little further to the left, and saw a tree that looked like it was struggling to get the same amount of water and sunlight as the rest of them, since it was considerably smaller and a little twisted. It looked like some of the branches were ready to snap off at any moment, and the few leaves that were there appeared to be wrinkled and dying. He sort of felt sorry for the tree - though it was just a tree - because it looked very unhealthy. Why Madisyn would choose to sit there, he didn't know. She always did seem to go for the stranger-looking things. Maybe she felt sorry for it. He doubted that many other people frequently sat beneath it to enjoy a picnic. They probably chose the big oak tree near-by because it was what most people would call 'pretty' and would shelter them from the rain and sun. Red didn't need to sit by something pretty, because he already had Madisyn, who was beautiful.
Sighing, he began to walk over to the tree, hand-in-hand with Madisyn. He held her hand tightly. Partly because Beaker would fall off his finger otherwise, but mostly because he felt closer to her that way. Red gasped as Madisyn stopped, practically running into him, and it took him a few seconds to steady his balance so that he didn't fall over and make an even greater fool of himself. He wondered why she'd stopped. Maybe she had changed her mind and wanted to sit beneath the oak after all, which was a shame; he was quite set upon sitting by the mangled one now.
Madisyn began fumbling in her bag. He wondered whether she'd forgotten something, but then she pulled something rather furry out. He immediately recognized it as Phoenix, and a wide grin spread across his face. Phoenix really was the cutest little thing he'd seen for a long time. He wrinkled his nose, smiling, and let Madisyn press Phoenix's nose against his.
"Phoenix! Hello, little guy," he cooed, dropping the basket down a little and bending his elbow so that it would rest there and his hand was free. He took Phoenix with his left hand, keeping Syn's hand held tightly in his other. "Now Beaker and Phoenix can play together." He laughed, and pressed Phoenix against his chest so that he could hold him more safely. Phoenix's fur felt very soft against his palm, and he stroked it with his forefinger, making sure that he wouldn't drop him, and hoping that Syn didn't mind him carrying the animal. "Thanks for bringing him." Red had made sure that he'd also brought something for Phoenix, should he come. He'd got a little bowl for him, and inquired in at the pet store as to what chinchillas ate. So he'd brought along with him a small amount of hay and some vegetables.
Red began to walk again, and set down the basket when they arrived at the crippled tree. He popped Phoenix down on top of the side of the basket that he wasn't opening, retracting his hand from Syn's, and pulled out a classic picnic blanket which he spread out neatly on the ground. He sat down cross-legged on the blanket, and patted the place next to him so that she'd sit down too.
Red pulled out some candles and a cigarette lighter, and lit the candles, smiling. "You should probably put Phoenix back in your bag.. the candles could be dangerous." He also pulled out some plates, some fruit, sandwiches, and other such food that you'd bring on a date. "Oh, but I brought some food for Phoenix. So whenever he wants to eat, he can." Red smiled, hoping that she liked how the date was going so far.
"And, um.." Red pulled out some red roses and handed them to her. "I hope you like roses. I figure you liked red, you know, because that's my name," he joked. "Be careful you don't prick yourself on the thorns."

& you swore you saw me laughing & i swore i saw you smile “Now Beaker and Phoenix can play together.” Madi stared down at Phoenix and muttered to herself, “I just hope he doesn’t eat him.” Red, Syn, Beaker and Phoenix made their way over to the mangled tree. Granted, at first Red looked a bit puzzled as to just why that tree, but Syn had her reasons. Not to mention, Red looked quite content with Phoenix in hand. Syn felt a great comfort watching Red and Phoenix. Despite having her good friends, Phoenix was the one who was always there. He was more so her child than pet, which clearly made her protective of who she just handed him off to. But watching Red with Phoenix made her feel safe. It was the way he was naturally kind and nurturing. Madi was unique. That was a given. But despite her usual bubbly happy persona, one little known fact about Syn was that she did, indeed, get sad. She saw that she was different and she was well known for being one of the genuinely kind-hearted people, but that was both a blessing and a curse. Often times she found herself in a downward spiral all because of the way the world was going. She was a sensitive girl and it killed her o feel like she was one of the good people left. She was losing her faith in humanity. But it was people like Red who gave her hope. It was the way he smiled politely, even when he didn’t understand what she was saying or doing. It was the way he kept an open mind to her dreams, no matter how farfetched they seemed. If was his gentle heart and the way he appreciated everything, small as it was, just as she did.
As they found their way to the crooked oak Red sat the basket down with Phoenix on top while Syn propped herself against the tree watching Red with a slight smirk and he spread out their classic picnic blanket. He looked up at her and gestured her to the seat next to him. She sat down tucking herself and tugging her skirt down. A tight miniskirt probably wasn’t practical for a picnic, but she could bear with it. “You should probably put Phoenix back in your bag…the candles could be dangerous,” Red said setting up the candles and lighting them, despite the steady daylight. But the romantic gesture was enough. She plucked the chinchilla up off the basket and held him up in front of her face. “Good point. Last thing we need is this little fur ball catching on fire…or chewing up the candles.” She gently set him in her bag and propped the bag up against her leg to prevent him from crawling back out.
Looking around as Red laid out the food, Syn realized just how much thought and effort he had actually into the date. Everything looked so well prepared and organized. He had even managed to avoid meat, which happened to be Syn’s one and only vice. From a young age, after her musical epiphany, Madisyn decided she could no longer partake in the “disturbance, murder, and consumption of harmless creatures” who are “just trying to survive as we do.” Not as if she didn’t know Red was sweet and thoughtful, but she couldn’t help but feel warm thinking of the effort.
“Oh, but I brought some food for Phoenix. So whenever he wants to eat, he can.” Damn. Browning points for Red. As said, Phoenix was like Syn’s own infant son. “Red!" She squeaked a bit. “That’s very sweet. He’ll appreciate that. The little fatty.” She grinned at him brightly. Slowly he turned and pulled up a small bouquet of roses he had sitting by his side. “And um…I hope you like roses. I figured you liked red. You know, because that’s my name. Be careful. Don’t prick yourself on the thorns.” She chuckled a bit. “Actually, I do like Red…quite a bit.” She was hoping he got the play on words, because she felt herself blushing, and knew she’d look like an idiot otherwise.
She looked down at the flowers in her lap, picking them up and studying the stems. She tapped the thorns lightly, as to not prick herself. “You know, it’s a shame,” she said gently twisting the thorns of and dropping them into her lap. “People worry so much about these things…almost scared of them. They’re just trying to protect themselves." She laid the bouquet at her side and gave Red a genuine smile. “They’re lovely.”
Syn was going on one of her tangents again. Before she could stop herself she found herself with her back resting against the tree and her legs crossed and stretched out in front of her. She smirked. “I like this tree. But I feel bad for it. The way it looks mangled and distorted. I can only imagine that it doesn’t get much attention.” She made eye contact with him. “Positive attention that is.” She touched her fingertips to the bark. “But the way it looks…that’s not the tree’s fault. So I’ve decided. I’m going to love this tree. Someone should. It deserves it.” She gave him a dignified nod. And then she realized how odd she probably sounded. She curled her legs up under herself again and pursed her lips. Frankly, she didn’t mind sounding strange, but she had been rambling for far too long. She leaned forward and picked up one of the sandwiches, taking a small nibble out of the corner. “So I’m sure you’ve had enough of Syn-antics for one day. Let’s talk about Red.” She gave him a pleasant smirk and took another nibble preparing herself to take in whatever he was willing to give.
