Alex had a lot on his mind as he drove down to the Pier, what with Melrose, the band, and everything he had here, and he was just going to leave..? i didn't really make any sense, but what else was he supposed to do? this was it, he got a recording deal, this was his shot at becoming someone big, and it could be the only shot he gets. Ever. End of story. Still, something just didn't feel right - maybe it was leaving Melrose behind, or even the band, and, honestly, was he even ready for this?
Fuck it. This is what Alex had been waiting his entire life, and he wasn't going to chicken out now “i mean, i can always come back” He told himself “...right?” Too many questions, not enough answers. If this had been a street deal, he wouldn't even of had second thoughts, he'd just be gone; but this was a lot more than a drug deal, this was life, and a couple other people's too. He'd already talked to Nico about his position on the crew, and it's not like he did much anyways, he was a pack mule more than a really techie, the band didn't need a lot of technical work. At least, not as much as some.
But right now, he needed to focus on the task at hand. He had called Mel earlier that morning, asking her too meet him at the peer, then he dropped by the store – he wanted her to have something to remember him by. It wasn't anything special, just a small golden 'A' with a heart shaped diamond set in it on a gold chain, but he figured she'd like it. Other than that, he didn't really have a clue what he was about to do as he pulled in to the parking lot. His heart was pounding on his, more questions. What will she say? How is she going to take this? Is she going to hate him? Alex was scared. He didnt like being scared. He wasn't allowed to get scared, but this scared the shit out of him. After a few minutes he took a deep breath and pushed himself up out of his Mustang, and set out looking for those Beautiful green eyes he knew so well.

Melrose, always the perfectionist, was making sure to get her makeup just right when her phone rang. The caller ID said that it was Alex's number, and she snatched it up. As soon as she answered, he told her to meet him at the pier later. She frowned slightly but agreed. She wondered why and for what; she didn't like not knowing things. She set the phone back down in its resting place and finished her makeup, all the while racking her brain on why he wanted to meet her. And at the pier, too. She shrugged it off and finished getting ready for the day.
As the time went by and the more she thought about it the more antsy she was becoming. Was he going to give her a gift? Surprise her with something? Do something romantic? She didn't know but she was excited nonetheless. She couldn't seem to keep still and Calico and Justyn were teasing her about it, saying that he was going to throw her in the ocean or something. She knew they were only kidding, like always, so she just went along with it. After an hour or so she jumped into her silver Jaguar XF and drove to the pier.
Melrose searched for his car in the almost empty parking lot but didn't see it. She frowned and moved into a parking spot. She waited in her car for a few minutes but couldn't stand it. She had to move around to keep her anxiety down. She got out and walked the oddly long pier. She loved the ocean. Growing up in Las Vegas she never really got to see it but once she moved to New Jersey she was at the beach all the time - and she was still pale, no matter how hard she tried to tan. Her heels clacked on the strong wooden boards as she walked, drumming her fingers on thighs impatiently.
She reached the end and stood there, taking in the scent of the salty air and enjoying the fresh, cool breeze. It had been so hot lately that even the slightest of winds felt like heaven. She closed her eyes and waited for what seemed like an eternity before she heard the sound of faint footsteps behind her. A smile instantly lighting her face, she turned around, her green orbs shining in the sunlight.

As Alex walked down the pier, he could feel every heart beat get heavier and heavier, and he weirdly found himself wondering what it would feel like to die. He could feel his feet slow with every step, his soft footfalls not carrying far, and as he looked up, he noticed Melrose standing at the end of the pier. He stopped for a moment, watching her in the light breeze, then started forward again, a light smile on his face, more anxious to be by her side than to get this over with.
As she turned to look at him, his smile widened as their eyes meet, and his pace picked up a bit, his heart skipping a beat just like it did every time, then picking up double time right after. Alex wasn't much for words in situations, and as they met he simply pulled her into his his arms, kissing her lips softly and hugging her tight, pulling away only to look in her eyes again. He loved her eyes, the bright green reminded him of the forests when his parents would take him camping before they died; of a simpler time, when it wasn't so hard to be happy.
“Hey there, Cutie” He smirked softly, know perfectly well that it bugged her when he called her cute, he just couldn't help it, it was fun to see her get all flustered. He pulled her in a little closer, sighing softly and closing his eyes as he pressed his forehead to hers.
“so..... i have some good news, and.... some really bad news” He frowned, his brow furrowing in frustration. This wasn't fair, why did he have to pick between his dream girl and his dream life. He wasn't even sure what he wanted more anymore, but right now, in this moment, it was definitely her. But he had made his decision, he was going to take this opportunity, it could be his only shot, and Alex King didn't miss a shot. Then again.. who was Alex King?

Melrose bit her bottom lip to stop herself from smiling wider. Whenever she saw Alex she just wanted to smile, and she always did, so much that her cheeks would hurt. She was always happy when he was around; he just seemed to have that effect on her. As he pulled her in for a hug she buried her face into his shoulder, taking in his scent. He always smelled so good and in that moment she didn't want to let go, and she wouldn't have if he didn't pull away. But she wanted to see his lovely face anyway.
"Hey cutie," she heard him say and she rolled her eyes, a smile still on her lips. "How many times do I have to tell you..." She shook her head and chuckled softly. She hated it when he called her cute but loved it at the same time. Of course, she wouldn't let him now that she loved it, because then he'd probably stop saying it. Mel scrunched her nose up slightly as their foreheads touched. Looking into his eyes she wished she could be around him every moment of every day. They could easily not say one thing to each other but understand each others' feelings so easily. She loved that.
Her smile turned down slowly as he spoke again. "So I have some good news...and some really bad news." She didn't like the sound of that, and her frown became more intensified as she noticed his expression. She was suddenly worried. She had never seen his face like that before, and it made her stomach sick with worry. She pulled back a little more to look at him straight. "Well, what is it, baby?" she asked, her brow furrowing.
She touched his cheek ever so lightly, her heart racing. How bad was this 'bad news', she wondered? And how good was the good news? She tried to think of what each could be but could come up with nothing. She leaned into him, her head on his chest. She realized that his heart was beating a little fast, too. She glanced up at him, waiting for an answer.

Alex breathed slowly, scared and unsure, but unfortunately set, on a course that was going to drive a rift between them and he hated it. “Well, what is it, baby?” Her voice ran through him. It was so calming, he loved it. But it didn't help much now, there was too much going for him to be calm. He was breaking inside thinking about how she could take this. Would she be okay with? No, of course not, but would she be supportive if him? Or would she hate him? He doubted that, but there was only one way to know for sure.
“i got noticed, be a record label, they want to put me on a deal, this could be my shot at doing something” Alex's heart raced a bit more. It was exciting, it was big, the biggest thing that had ever happened to him.... wait.. was it? Suddenly, looking at Melrose, he wasn't even sure about that even. Maybe she was, maybe he was making the biggest mistake of his life. “but.... if I take the deal... I leave the tour” His heart froze up at the thought of leaving, of letting go and drifting away. This tour was lie a home for a boy who didn't have one. He had friends here, enemies too, but even those were tolerable, if not welcome even. How was a 17 year old kid supposed to make a decision like this? But... when would he get the chance to again? Would he even? So many questions, and not a single answer.
But one question that stood out to him the most – Would this girl still love him? And he didn't know if he even wanted the answer to that, so scared of what it could be. This was the hardest thing Alex have ever done, and no one would call his life easy. He looked back in her eyes, this time finding no solace as he watched for her reaction, hoping for the best, fearing for the worst, Thoughts raced through Alex's mind without direction or purpose.

Melrose was anxious to know what all this news was. She wanted to hear the good news so badly but the bad news she could always do without. She wasn't one to take bad news well, or even at all; when her father told her that her mother died she refused to accept and even ignored until she realized that her mother really was never coming home again, or tuck her in at night. She remembered that feeling of dread, disappointment, and utter loneliness. Indeed she never took bad news well.
She began to trace a design on his shirt with her finger to try to calm herself down a little bit. She hated being anxious as much as she hated not knowing things. She kissed his neck lightly before he spoke, and she pulled away a little to look at him. "I got noticed, be a record label, they want to put me on a deal, this could be my shot at doing something." She gasped happily, beaming up at him. "Oh, Alex, that's great! I'm so happy." And she was. She knew what his passion was and what he wanted to do, and now he was finally getting a chance to do it.
So that was the good news, now time for the bad. Mel tried to brace herself but nothing could have possibly prepared her for what she was going to hear next. "But...if I take the deal...I leave the tour." Her smile faded out quickly. Leave the tour? That meant leaving her, too. Her arms dropped from around him and she took a step back, staring at him. Her red lips opened to say something but she couldn't seem to find any words.
Her gaze dropped from his and she looked down at the ground, a mixture of feelings flowing through her. She was ecstatic for him, but depressed at the same time. Suddenly all of the feelings of when her mother died came flooding back to her tenfold. She never thought she'd feel that way again but there she was, standing on the pier with the only guy she could really say she loved, with the guy who was going to leave her. She then realized that that was why he had asked her to meet up with him. To break it to her at place where she was felt comfortable and safe. It didn't feel like that anymore.
She finally found her voice and looked up, avoiding his eyes. "O-oh," she said softly. "I see. Well go for it. I mean you don't get a chance like that every day, right? I'm happy, really." She looked back down and bit her lip hard, feeling the warm sting of tears behind her eyes. No, no crying. She had to keep herself in check, keep up the strong exterior she took so long to build up. But she couldn't. She felt the walls come crashing down and tears slowly began to slide down her face.

Alex's body trembled as she pulled away. He hated this, why did he have to break her heart like this? “O-oh,” she said softly. “I see. Well go for it. I mean you don't get a chance like that every day, right? I'm happy, really.” Alex watched as she tried to hold it in, tried to be strong for him, he hated it, its not what he wanted, he wanted her, wanted her to beg him to stay, tell him not to do it, but he knew she wouldn't. She wanted whats best for him, she knew what his music meant to him and she wouldn't let him give it up. Alex watched the tear slide slowly down her cheek, and he reached out his hand, cupping her cheek in his palm, wiping away the tear with his thumb.
“I don't want to go, Melrose....” It was true, completely true. All Alex wanted to do was stay by here side. That's where he always wanted to be, it felt like home more than anywhere else ever had. He stepped in again, holding her tightly, his cheek pressed against her hair. This is what was right, this is what was good, this was worth it all. This was what he was giving up. “I want to stay here with you... it's not fair..” He closed his eyes, tears threatening to fall. What was this? Was he about to cry? Fuck man, don't do that! What happened to that thug kid that wanted to be the biggest rapper in the world?
Alex didn't know what voice to listen to anymore. He didn't know which path to follow, no matter which way he went, he risked losing the other. Alex slipped his hand into his pocket, around the necklace. He hadn't wanted a box or anything, it didn't really matter, he just wanted her to have something to remember him by. He knew he'd never forget her, she was the best thing that had ever happened to him, even better than getting a record deal... so why was he taking it? Another question to throw on the pile. His dad would know what to do, but Alex hadn't seen his dad since he was a kid, no one had. Alex's dad was dead, somewhere up in heaven, Alex hoped, watching him, guiding him.

Melrose stood there, her head turned down, the tears dropping to the wooden boards. This was stupid. Why did he have to go? Because this was his dream. Why couldn't she go with him? Because she couldn't leave her band, her second family. Why was this so hard? Because she loved him. She had let her guard down tremendously for one person and this is what happened. She should have known this would happen; it happened before and history often tends to repeat itself. She clenched her teeth tightly to will the tears to stop.
She swallowed hard. Her heart fell like it was breaking into a million shards and she didn't think she'd have the energy to find them. She felt his hand on her cheek and she wanted to turn away, to stop caring right at that moment. She didn't know if she would have the power to even look at him again. At that same moment she wanted to savor that little, simple touch. "I don't want to go, Melrose.." she heard him say. But you're going to anyway, she thought. She felt his arms snake around her again and clung onto him.
She should have never fallen for someone on the tour. No matter who it was, she knew it would be a bad idea but she did anyway. Was this what the end of love felt like? If so she never wanted to fall in love again. She never wanted to love again. "I want to stay here with you...it's not fair.." She closed her eyes, trying to bring her sheild back up. She swallowed again and forced the tears to stop falling. "Yeah. Well life's not fair," she mumbled. It was a phrase they both knew all too well. He had lost his parents too young and she had one too many hard times in her life. Nothing was ever fair.
Mel took in a deep breath and pulled away. She flattened down her shirt just for something to do and looked up at him, realizing her face probably looked like crap now. She held her head high to pretend to look like a strong woman but underneath she was crumbling. "So... when do you leave?" she asked. Looking at him had started to hurt already. Just minutes ago she was ecstatic to see him and to feel him, and now she was hurt beyond words. For a seventeen year old kid he was much more mature beyond his years and she knew that Alex knew what he was doing. She just wished he didn't have to leave her.

Alex watched as Melrose rebuilt the walls he had worked so hard to get past. She was going to hate him for leaving, he could see it happening. Nothing in his life ever worked out like he wanted it to, this included. Alex wished he had more time to figure this out, but the record company wanted him now. He had a meeting soon, then it was on a plane to Detroit for a meeting with the executives, then back here to start recording. Even as this was going on, this, right now, Alex was still anxious to get in the booth. He'd definitely have a lot to rap about now.
“so... when do you leave?” Alex sighed softly and looked down at his watch. He had twenty minutes before the meeting, then straight to the airport. He looked up and met her eyes. Yeah, she was gonna hate him. “..really soon” Alex's hand tightened around the necklace in his pocket, and he wondered if she would even want it now. He was still going to give it to her, it was just him, he didn't want to leave forever. He had made a promise to himself to come back and find her one day, and he would keep it. He knew he would, he loved this girl.
Alex pulled his hand out of his pocket and stepped closer to her for a third time, his hands slipping around her neck as he looked in her eyes. Then he clasped it and stepped back, looking at her, a small smile on his face. Before he had left the jewelry shop, Alex had a message engraved on the back - 'I'll come back someday, promise' - he just hoped she'd see it. “don't forget about me, kay?” Alex knew she wouldn't, but he still felt like saying it. He looked down, he had to go. He leaned in and kissed her cheek, then looked in her eyes once more. He couldn't help it – He kissed her. Deep, on the lips, urgent, sad- a last kiss. Then he pulled away, wiping a tear from his eye as he turned and walked back the way he had come. He had a career to make, but did he have enough heart left to do it?

Melrose felt the steel walls coming back stronger than ever. She knew now that she would never let anyone in that could hurt her again or disappoint her. At least, not like this. The tears had stopped for now but, sadly, she knew they'd be back later on that night or even that day. Looked like it was about time to hit a bar and get her drunk on so she could forget about this. Although it'd probably hit her just as bad tomorrow morning. She wondered if she'd even be able to do any of her shows.
No, she'd force herself. She couldn't let her band down, let her best friends down. She'd stay strong not for herself but for everyone else she had to impress. It was hard looking at him now, knowing he wasn't going to be around anymore. It was like a knife in the chest and, as they taught her in her EMT class in high school, all chest wounds suck. She watched as he glanced down at his watch and frowned. "Really soon." That meant that he was going to leave that very day. She wouldn't even have one more night to fall asleep next to him. She looked away from him and eyed the ocean instead, wishing she could be as strong and carefree as it had seemed at that very moment.
Mel forced herself to look back at him, this time her eyes blank. She had a thing for detaching herself from situations she didn't particularly enjoy, and it had become so easy for her. She stood up straight as he moved closer again. She didn't think she'd be able to deal with another small touch from him without breaking down entirely. She almost took a step back before realizing that he had put a necklace around her neck. She didn't look down at it, but instead watched him.
"Don't forget about me, kay?" She didn't respond. He knew that she wouldn't, so it was a dumb thing to have said. She watched him as he moved in close to kiss her cheek then again to kiss her, deeply and romanticaly. She couldn't help but to kiss back. He pulled away then, walking back down the pier. At that moment she wanted nothing more for him to just turn back and tell her that he wasn't leaving, that he couldn't leave her here. But he didn't, and she watched until he was out of sight.
Slowly, stiffly, Melrose began to walk back to her car. She unlocked it and sat down in the drivers' seat, staring blankly ahead at the car in front of her. It was then that she remembered the necklace. She reached behind her neck to look at it. It was gorgeous. She loved when he got her gifts, but then the painful reality that he may never do that again hit her. She began to tear up again looking at it and shoved it in the glovebox. Out of sight, out of mind. Now time to head back to the place where she would be told 'I told you so' by everyone. Or maybe she should just get drunk now. She went with the second option and drove out of the parking lot, tears streaming her face again.
